Get Involved!

We have all heard those words spoken many times: Get Involved.

And at some point we have all thought to ourselves, “Why should I?” and “What’s in it for me?”

There are many reasons why people just like you choose to get involved in Civil Air Patrol:

  • Wanting to help others in need
  • A desire to serve the nation (or for veterans, a desire to continue serving)
  • Wanting to help guide and support our youth, and prepare them to be future leaders
  • Looking for a way to “give back” to the community
  • Wanting to make a difference
  • …and more

Whatever the reason, they all share a common thread: from the newest Cadet to the National Commander, everyone involved in CAP is a volunteer. Each member is following in the footsteps of thousands of like-minded people who volunteered before them, adding to a rich and ever-lengthening heritage. As a result, the spirit of volunteerism that began in 1941 with a handful of dedicated pilots is alive and well, and has allowed CAP to grow into a nationwide organization with over 60,000 adult members and over 25,000 cadets. Without their ongoing and generous donations of time, energy, expertise, and desire, CAP would simply not exist.

As for the “What’s in it for me?” question… To put it simply, what a person gets out of CAP depends on what he or she chooses to put into it. For those who are willing to put in the time and effort, CAP offers opportunities that can reach far and above anything they ever thought they could do.

How can you get involved? There are many different ways:

  • Become an active CAP member — active membership in CAP is available to anyone ages 12 and up. Youth 12-18 can participate in the Cadet Program, while adults 18 and up can join as Senior members. Visit our Cadet and Senior pages for more details.
  • Become a supporting CAP member — for individuals and businesses who want to be associated with CAP but do not have the time to actively participate, there are other forms of membership available. Each has certain requirements and limitations; please visit our Additional Membership Options page to learn more.
  • Donate to CAP — as a non-profit volunteer organization, CAP relies heavily on its members, local communities and businesses for support. Some individuals and businesses may choose to make financial donations to support their local squadron, which provides both support for CAP and possible tax benefits for the donor. Learn more about this option on our Donations page.
  • Sponsor a wreath — To honor the service and sacrifices of our veterans and raise funds to support our programs, CAP partners with Wreaths Across America to sell sponsorships for wreaths which are then placed on veteran’s graves. By sponsoring a wreath, individuals and families can honor their loved ones and support CAP at the same time. Our Wreaths Across America page has more details.

Whatever path of support you choose to follow, know that any effort and every contribution regardless of size is appreciated.

So, what say you? Will you take up the challenge to make a difference and Get Involved?
