On March 28th, Cadet 2nd Lt. Rhett Graham, son of Pam and Bobby Graham of Howe, received the General Billy Mitchell Award in a ceremony held at the squadron building. Named in honor of the aviation pioneer and advocate for an independent air force for the United States following World War I, the Mitchell award is the second milestone in the CAP Cadet Program, and is awarded to cadets who have completed 8 of the 16 achievements in the program. This award also signifies a cadet’s transition from a non-commissioned officer into the cadet officer ranks. Approximately 15 percent of all cadets nationwide receive this award.

On hand to present the award was Ms. Sarah Somers, Director of the Grayson County Office of Emergency Management.

In her remarks Ms. Somers noted, “I love going to things like this! I meet people like Cadet Graham and all of you who are going through the program, and I am heartwarmed and thankful there are people coming up behind us – good, strong people like all of you – who will serve our community, possibly going into the Air Force and other services. I am so incredibly honored to be here.”

Somers also mentioned her earliest involvement of CAP in local emergency management activities. “The first disaster to hit after I became the Emergency Manager was in December 2008,” she said, “and one of the first requests I signed off was a Civil Air Patrol mission to fly over the disaster area where a tornado has cut a swath across Grayson County.”

Cadet Graham has been a member of the CAP Cadet Program since June 2013. He is trained and qualified to participate in ground Search and Rescue (SAR) missions, and through CAP he attended the U.S. Air Force’s Civil Engineering Academy at Tyndall AFB in Panama City, Florida in 2015. A homeschooled student, his future plans include enrolling in the Air Force ROTC program while in college with the goal of becoming an Air Force officer.
